What is Gaming For Hope?

History of Gaming For Hope

The event formerly known as Gaming Day is one of the fastest-growing student-sponsored events in the history of Marist College. The origins of Gaming Day stem from two events that the Anime Society and Computer Society held independently, the Console Gaming Tournament and the LAN Party, respectively. (A LAN Party, for those who may not know, is when a gathering of people who bring their computers to a central location and play video games against each other.) In the fall of 2002, the Computer Society decided to combine the two events to get a bigger turnout and make a larger event. Gaming Day took two events that had attendance of about 50 people each and combined them to make one of the largest club events the Marist community has.

Over the years, we have added corporate sponsorship, advertising, raffles, tournaments, and prizes. The size of the event has also grown. More than 700 people attended this past fall in the Marist College Cabaret, triple the number of people who showed up at our first event.

The Cabaret at Marist College is the third largest room available on campus, and with the past growth of the event, it was decided to move the event to the 3,944-person capacity James J. McCann Center. The Cabaret was too small to house all of the people who would attend if we advertised to the general public, which led to the relocation. The McCann Center is the largest space at Marist College and one of the largest venues in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

With the prospect of a larger venue, also came the task of charging admission. With the permission of Marist President Dennis Murray, we determined that donating all of the proceeds to charity was in keeping with the ideals and mission of the College, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation was quickly designated as the beneficiary.

After the success of Gaming For Hope in 2005, we quickly began planning this the event. This year, all the money raised would go to Child's Play, an organization providing toys and gaming materials to sick children. The $1400 mark was smashed, and we looked forward to working with Child's Play in the future.
